A social experiment: Creating a Moderate Majority
The Moderate Majority are a group that looks toward advancing America in a positive and non-extreme fashion. We believe and understand that America has been enriched by those that came before us, from various backgrounds including ethnicities and geographies. That diversity has blended into an American society in which peoples around the world aspire to re-create, again and again. In the last several decades, however, extreme views and powerful forces backing them have sought to create rifts in our ability to continue our advancement. This has polarized and paralyzed our nation in many ways, on many fronts, to extremes not seen since the 1960s; the goal of the Moderate Majority is to bring voices back to the moderate citizens of the nation, to again return us to a collective path that empowers all of us, alienates none of us, and forges a path that ensures our nation will remain that beacon and example to others around the world.
What is the anatomy of a moderate voice? Put simply, it is a voice that has a broad responsibility to operate not only in the center, but also frequently to the left and right of center (but never far from the middle). Our group must operate the same way; on certain issues a leaning toward left or right must be guided by two primary factors: What is socially responsible, and what is financially feasible. Put more simply: What is the right thing to do, and can we afford to do it? Extreme views won’t find a good home in our group; Big business and pro-union must find balance; Pro-life and pro-choice must find balance. Without that center balance, we don’t move forward.
This group must collaborate, negotiate, and agree that goals in our society are a process, not a demand. This group must acknowledge that taking sides will result in stalemate; agreeing on objectives and a reasonable path to success will require opinions, thoughtful conversation, and ultimately, an application of common sense where ever possible. Special interests may not find traction within this group; fairness in application of our Constitution should, however.
Why is this group necessary? We have devolved into a two-party system that is incapable of adequate progress. As we grow as a nation, issues across a wide spectrum of topics must be understood and managed in a way that does its best to provide for the common good. Our current two-party system appears to operate in a partisan vacuum, where the party with the majority often excludes the minority in policy, laws, decisions, strategy, etc. Along the way, these “factions” have migrated further from the middle thought processes that we believe reside in a very large majority of citizens. This is the time for a moderate movement to regain control of the conversation, while also forcing cooperation permanently back into our government.
Now, what’s next and what’s a possible vision? It’s not that hard, actually. First, we have drafted several position statements and opinion blogs, posted here, for you ALL to comment and provide input. Topics include: Immigration; Healthcare; International Trade and Relations; Labor and Business; Entitlements (Social Security and Medicare); Military; Education; Abortion; Equality; Law Enforcement; Taxation; Earmarks; Term Limits. More topics you want to see included? – tell us.
Second, what’s the vision? Well, let’s see where we all go in getting to a consensus. Does this experiment have traction, or is it a learning experience? We’ll find out. We can’t become an actual “party” – should we want to – unless we have a lot of us on board, and we start putting up candidates in elections. If we get a lot of people looking at what we’re up to, we might be surprised to see a Democrat or a Republican running in their district on OUR platform. The Tea Party did it (extreme fiscal right), and the DSA (Democratic Socialists of America) did it (extreme social left). If this works, we will attract from BOTH sides. If we see this have success, the momentum will regain control of the national conversation.
This will be fun 😊 Hold onto ur knickers, everyone! And thanks for following our wandering thoughts!
